How Acupuncture Works Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine that’s based on the philosophy that vital energy flowing through the body nourishes and protects from illness. Any blockage or misdirection in this energy flow is believed to be responsible for many ailments. Qi energy has two aspects: yin and yang. In the context of acupuncture, the causation of diseases is described as either an excess or deficiency of yin or yang.
An acupuncture treatment involves insertion of fine, stainless steel, sterile and single-use, disposable needles into certain points on the body called acupuncture points. These points are located between muscles and between muscles and tendons, near nerves and bones. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, appear in different sizes and are not designed to cut the skin. The acupuncturist stimulates acu-points along the meridian paths to help restore the normal balance and flow of Qi so the entire bodily systems can function together in harmonious pattern.
