Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or wrist joint pain is the inflammation of the median nerve that runs through the palmer aspect of your hands between the flexor tendons at the wrist joint through a small space in your wrist called the carpal tunnel. This median nerve controls the sensations and movements in your thumb, index and middle fingers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by the compression of the median nerve which produces sensations of tingling, numbness, weakness and sharp pain in these three fingers.

Usually the diagnosis of this condition is confirmed by performing a Phalen’s test at the clinic.  Certain individuals are more prone to the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome including people who use their hands excessively at work (computer work, typing, knitting).  Individuals with hypothyroidism, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis can suffer from Carpal Tunnel syndrome. Sometimes this condition is seen in pregnant women as well.

Acupuncture Treatment for Carpal Tunnel

Acupuncture can help reduce the swelling and inflammation of the wrist joint and in some cases completely treat the condition. According to the traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture), it is important to not only treat the symptoms, but to also find out the cause and it aims to target the roots of the problem.  At Zahra Acupuncture & Herb Clinic, after the initial assessment, the patient's pulse and tongue will be checked in order to diagnose and set up a treatment plan that is individually customized.
