Pre and post-menopausal patterns refer to the rhythms that bookend menopause in women. Symptoms include periodic hot flashes marked by a flushed complexion, sweating, palpitation, insomnia, blurred vision, irritability, menstrual disturbances, occasional edema of the face and lower limbs, loss of appetite, over-sensitivity, agitation, emotional instability, anxiety and depression.
Western practitioners attribute these symptoms to fluctuations in hormone levels and prescribe hormone-replacement therapy as a catch-all solution.
According to the Health Canada website, hormone replacement therapy leads to increased incidences of strokes, blood clots and heart disease. It’s recommended that HRT be employed ONLY when symptoms become intolerable. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies provide a safe alternative that help women enjoy their menopausal years without interruption to their daily lives.
According to an article published in The Journal of The North American Menopause Society, acupuncture can contribute to a clinically relevant reduction in hot flashes in postmenopausal women.
