Acupuncture Results in Better Fertility & Helps Regulate Menstrual Cycles

A 36-year-old female visited Zahra Acupuncture Clinic last December with a health history of amenorrhea (no menstruation) for 2 years. She was on birth control pills for 8 years and experience no abnormalities in her menstruation cycles. However, when she stopped taking the pills, her menstruation cycle resumed abnormally. She had very high levels of FSH and LH (lazy ovaries) with a very low number of eggs. She was told by the fertility center that she had no choice but to go through the IVF procedure if she ever wanted to get pregnant in the future.

The Acupuncture Treatment at Zahra Acupuncture Clinic

Acupuncture treatment involves an insertion of stainless and disposable needles into certain points of the body to help regulate the Qi and blood circulation. According to Chinese Medicine, infertility is caused by many different reasons. At Zahra Acupuncture Clinic, first, we check the pulse and the tongue and perform a thorough assessment before starting the acupuncture treatment. Depending on every individual, the acupuncture points may vary from one person to another.

Women who struggle with fertility issues often come to Zahra Acupuncture to help boost their fertility. With past patients, we’ve seen that even though all their blood and hormone tests and levels are normal, there was no explanation of why getting naturally pregnant was an issue for them. Therefore, we strongly recommend women who are going through infertility to try out Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatments before resulting in the IVF procedure.

How Long Does it Take to See Fertility Results?

It took seven sessions, once a week, of acupuncture treatments to regulate our patient’s menstrual cycle. She continued with acupuncture treatments and we also performed dry cupping and moxibustion once a week to ensure a normal menstrual cycle. After a few more treatments, acupuncture sessions were reduced to once a month. In addition to the treatments, Dr. Zahra gave her a diet to follow which is ultimately based on her body constitution.  In her case, voiding sugar and coffee from her diet proved to be beneficial.

Boosting Fertility Hormones with Acupuncture

Acupuncture normalizes the dysfunction of ovulatory and fertility hormones (the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis) and controls gonadotropin levels which release hormones (GnRH), follicle stimulating hormone (F.S.H.), luteinizing hormones (L.H.) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). These helped Dr. Zahra’s patient by releasing better quality and more quantity eggs. Only with one try, she became pregnant.

How does Chinese Medicine help with female fertility issues?

In order to treat people with fertility issues, we have to ensure that they have a regular menstrual cycle. Imbalances in FSH/LH hormone production is one of the main causes of why they cannot get pregnant easily. Acupuncture helps regulate the production of FSH and LH hormones which help release high-quality eggs from the ovaries. This means acupuncture promotes ovulation and stimulates the uterine lining which helps prepare the uterus for fertilization.

Acupuncture Helps Reduce Stress & Anxiety

Other benefits of acupuncture with regards to fertility are that it helps reduce stress and anxiety, improving the immune system and the energy, improving the lido and decreasing the chance of miscarriage. These benefits all contribute to and affect a woman’s body to enable them to get pregnant. In addition, acupuncture improves IVF/IUI pregnancy rates. Acupuncture helps prepare the uterus for the IVF procedure.

Can acupuncture help with Male fertility?

Acupuncture is also proven to be beneficial with male fertility issues with regards to improving the sperm count, sperm motility and sperm shape. In other words, acupuncture increases the number of sperms and improves their motility.
