Thinking about trying acupuncture but feeling a little nervous about the needles? Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable before you arrive.
At Zahra Acupuncture Clinic in Downtown Vancouver, your first visit is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and receive care tailored to your needs.
We Begin with a Conversation
Your appointment starts with a discussion about what brings you in. Along with your main concern, I will ask about your medical history, sleep, digestion, stress, medications, and overall health.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these details help build a broader picture of your wellbeing. Depending on your concerns, the assessment may also include checking areas of pain, examining movement, or looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse.
Allow approximately one hour for your first visit, including the consultation and treatment. Follow-up appointments generally last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment provided.
Can I Have Acupuncture If I’m Pregnant, Take Blood Thinners, or Have a Pacemaker?
Being pregnant, taking blood thinners, or having a pacemaker does not automatically rule out acupuncture. Treatment can often be adapted to your needs.
Please mention these circumstances before treatment. Blood thinners can increase the likelihood of bruising or bleeding, pregnancy requires appropriate treatment choices, and electrical stimulation may be unsuitable for people with pacemakers.
Your Treatment Is Explained
Before we begin, I will explain the recommended treatment and answer your questions. If needles make you anxious, please tell me. We can take things slowly, and you can ask to pause or stop at any time.
You will rest comfortably on a treatment table, with the areas needed for treatment accessible and your privacy respected.
What Do Acupuncture Needles Feel Like?
Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles. Insertion usually causes little discomfort, although you may notice a brief prick or bee sting sensation followed by warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a mild ache. Some points produce very little sensation.
A session may involve around five to 20 needles, with the number and placement tailored to your treatment. When appropriate, gentle needle stimulation, heat, or electro-acupuncture may be included after discussing it with you.
The needles often remain in place for approximately 15 to 30 minutes while you rest quietly. Removal is generally comfortable. Tell me immediately if you experience sharp pain or discomfort so I can adjust the treatment.
How Should You Prepare?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and bring a list of your medications and supplements.
Please do not come on an empty stomach or fast before your acupuncture treatment. Have a light meal or snack beforehand, and avoid a very heavy meal immediately before your appointment. Please also avoid coffee, other caffeinated drinks, and alcohol right before treatment. If you need to fast for a medical reason, let the clinic know before your visit.
What Happens Afterward?
You may feel relaxed, refreshed, or more energized after treatment. Occasionally, mild soreness or a small bruise can develop at a needle site.
Your treatment schedule will depend on your symptoms, how long they have been present, and your response. Initially, one or two appointments per week may be recommended. For some concerns, an initial course of six to eight sessions may be appropriate, with progress reviewed throughout.
Some people notice changes early, while others need more time. You do not need to be convinced that acupuncture will work before trying it. We will set realistic goals together and reassess the approach if you are not making meaningful progress.
